On the Nonlinear Mapping of a Surface Gravity Wave Spectrum into a Sar Image Spectrum and Freak Wave Detection

چکیده

It is shown that the nonlinear mapping relation between a surface gravity wave spectrum and its SAR image spectrum, as derived by Hasselmann and Hasselmann [1], is not complete. The reason for this is that the velocity bunching effect is so nonlinear that effects of skewness and kurtosis are as important as the nonlinear terms already retained in the Hasselmann and Hasselmann approach. An analysis of the azimuthal cutoff may therefore reveal information on the non-gaussian statistics of the sea surface, and may indicate the enhanced occurrence of freak waves.

Why SAR wave mode data of ERS and Envisat are inadequate for giving the probability of occurrence of freak waves

It would be highly desirable to have a global monitoring tool for the detection of freak or rogue ocean surface waves. Based on the SAR imaging theory of ocean surface waves developed already in the 1980's, it is argued that unfortunately, despite recent claims to the contrary, this is not possible using SAR wave mode data of the ERS and Envisat satellites. The main reason for this is that, due...

Nonlinear four-wave interaction and freak waves

Four-wave interactions play an important role in the evolution of the spectrum of surface gravity waves. This follows from direct simulations of an ensemble of ocean waves using the Zakharov equation. The theory of homogeneous four-wave interactions, extended to include effects of nonresonant transfer, compares favourably with the ensemble averaged results of the Monte Carlo simulations. In par...

EFFECT OF COUNTERPROPAGATING CAPILLARY GRAVITY WAVE PACKETS ON THIRD ORDER NONLINEAR ‎‎E‎VOLUTION EQUATIONS IN THE PRESENCE OF WIND FLOWING OVER WATER

Asymptotically exact and nonlocal third order nonlinear evolution equations are derivedfor two counterpropagating surface capillary gravity wave packets in deep water in thepresence of wind flowing over water. From these evolution equations stability analysis ismade for a uniform standing surface capillary gravity wave trains for longitudinal perturbation. Instability condition is obtained and g...

Surface Wave Parameters Retrieval in Coastal Seas from Spaceborne SAR Image Mode Data

Abstract— We have developed a retrieval scheme of surface wave parameters (wave height and wave propagation direction) from ERS Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) image mode data in coastal seas around Japan. In this study, we investigated the energy of simulated SAR spectrum at different wind speed using nonlinear wave-SAR imaging mechanism, derived the criteria to differentiate swell from wind wa...

Depth estimation of gravity anomalies by S-transform of analytic signal

The S-transform has widely been used in the analysis of non-stationary time series. A simple method to obtain depth estimates of gravity field sources is introduced in this study. We have developed a new method based on the spectral characteristics of downward continuation to estimate depth of structures. This calculation procedure is based on replacement of the Fourier transform with the S-Tra...
